19:00 - 20:00 | Narrative Session
Tuesday, May 20th, 2008
Narrative VJing or Live Cinema is an emerging subtheme in VJing. It explores narrative structures played in a live setting and therefore is a fusion of traditional cinema with the world of live visuals. Narrative Visuals can bring meaning and depth to a performance that is often missing in traditional VJing. The viewer is presented with an experience which allows for a deeper relationship with the visuals at hand, often via text on the screen and other devices to indicate the story-line. The audience can engage with the visuals strictly on the surface, or can follow the story and take something more out of the experience.
In this segment we show where narrative storytelling in a live environment has come from - tying together cave paintings, visual music, cinematography and modern laptop VJism. We describe techniques that can be used to bring a vivid linear story to the vj screen without sacrificing the spontaneity that make live visuals so effective. In a screening afterwards, short segments highlighting different approaches will be shown to exhibit the stylistic and conceptional diversity of Live Cinema and the almost untapped potential it provides.

We want to invite everyone using VDMX to hang out a little bit together. Sharing experiences, concepts and presets is the main target for this session. We have some hardcore VDMX addicts attending and they will definetly be able to give some insights into the technology and history of the “video-instrument”. laptops are encouraged for this session.
