JPECH - DE

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Its origins in the Berlin crossover of media-art and clubculture,
JPECH explores a basic approach to looping- and cut-up techniques
by making “3-chord visuals”. Being a VJ-band,
JPECH mainly performs LIVE with laptops and an analogue video-mixer,
using customised software that reacts REAL-TIME to audio-signals.
JPECH combines in its own unique way a wide array of skills
ranging from painting, photography and graphic design to animation and the USE OF LIGHT.
JPECH also produces (music-)videos and
surroundings in the form of (audio-)visual installations.
JPECH feels inspired by minimal and punk

WESSEL NIMMER (NL) painting, photos, visuals.
SUPERMANN (D) animation, video, visuals.

synesthete

synesthete (todd thille), a Los Angeles born artist living in Istanbul, is engaged in creating interactive installations and performances involving video and sound. He comes from a documentary and post-production background, having worked on film projects in Africa and Eastern Europe and spent a number of years working for Technicolor in Los Angeles.

In his performances, synesthete eschews traditional media methodologies in exchange for the immediacy of real-time reactive systems. The flexibility afforded by generative systems that are reacting to stimulus from the operator and environment is a welcome change to the world of rendering.

proto.beamaz: fALk - DE

proto.beamaz:fALkproto.beamaz - enriching the club culture with nonautomata narrative video centric visuals since 1999. fALk Gärtner - founder of proto.beamaz, a subsidiary of prototypen.com, comes from a traditional documentary video background: having grown up with a complete professional video production and post production studio in his parent’s basement in East Germany,  he then studied communication design while living next door to Berlin the years after the wall came down, fusing his influences into a unique high quality live performance that stretches contemporary attempts at definition.Fed up with the “empty” eye candy visuals of the rave generation, fALk  brings narrative storytelling techniques and meaningful content to the screens, in a distinct style that integrates  design, typography and live video mixing together with the club atmosphere - always rhythmic and flowing with the music - dark, technical and mystical. fALk’s performing presence on stage has encouraged audiences to experience the event on a deeper level as they make the connection that not only music can be mixed seamlessly, provocatively, and with a flair for live interpretation based on their response, but that visual content can be sampled live, chopped and remixed into a spontaneous joy for not only for the physical senses, but for the inner eye as well. fALk is definately not just a mouse clicker behind a pile of cables and machines — his complete mental and physical engagement with the mixer and laptops has earned him the respect of peers and crowds alike,  as they watch him tickle every last millisecond of sensitivity out of them with fluid fingertip control, to mix his immaculately pre-produced thematic material in synch with the ebb and flow of the DJ’s every frequency, and bending the classic distinction between sound and vision. In the past years he has demonstrated that the combination of style, content, and performance with the participation of the audience compliments events from 50 to 50.000 people. He has played alongside many musicians and DJs such as Paul van Dyk,  Westbam, LTJ Bukem, Rythm&Sound, Marky and many more. fALks involvement with the chaos computer club and  the blinkenlights project enabled him to play on one tower of the French National Library in Paris - the largest screen any VJ has ever played on to date. As member of the laptop VJ generation he is committed to bringing the VJ scene closer together through his activities as one of the founding members  of the AVIT - world wide VJ conferences, including the  organization of AVIT events in Berlin. fALk’s creative activities and thirst for perfection in all elements of his performances enable him to maintain a commitment to the the communicative roots in club culture which embraces the value of a dialog between venue, artists and the crowd.   fALks blog

fRED & Flux (=ff=) - DE

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

[eff-eff], [da-bl eff] visual performers group pseudonym. joint venture of the video artists fRED and Kiritan Flux from Berlin. Both share a cranky affinity towards pixilated and pixelated substance and appearance. fRED and Flux complement each other in their perception of the need to explore asetetic frontiers, experiment with geek technologies and actively get involved in the vj scene, pushing it towards a more cooperative self-conception.Currently, they are dealing with the issue of communication between the visual artist and the obsever, trying to extract the VJ’s position from being a stark and stiff nerd gazing at a laptop screen in a dark corner of the stage towards a respected appearance as visual performer. The =ff= method to achieve this is presenting an exaggerated self glorification withing the narrative content of the shown short-films on screen and on stage at the same time.

The presented stories of a =ff= narrative ego performance consist mainly of wild documentaries of their travel journeys, filmed and produced till the last second before their presentation. Not until they are driectly inside the environment of their planned presentation, =ff= equip themselves with odd costumes, film each other within the foreign set of their surrounding and spontaneously interweave fictional actions and short narratives. The shots work without sound, without script and without editing and they represent a radically egocentric type of video journalism in the subversive tradition of “gonzo” pioneer Hunter S. Thompson. Thompson once stated, that “true gonzo reporting needs the talents of a master journalist, the eye of an artist/photographer and the heavy balls of an actor. […] Probably the closest analogy to the ideal would be a film director/producer who writes his own scripts, does his own camera work and somehow manages to film himself in action, as the protagonist or at least a main character.” =ff= push it even a step further and appear as exclusive presentators of their films - but in the role of the gonzo protagonists of their nonlinear video documentaries. Every presentation represents a unique premiere, because the cutting happens in real-time and is irreproducable in its momentary aestetics. Thus, =ff= succeed in merging all the different paradigms known under the abbreviation “VJ”. Besides their appearance as gonzo “Video-Journalists”, they are cheeky “video jockeys” of the MTV generation, who present their self-made music clips to the public, and at the same time they eventually are ordinary “Visual Jockeys” from the illustrious underground club culture of Berlin, who can do their run-of-the-mill nerdcore flicker VJ standard program as well. effeff.tv

Together with VJ Leinwandler, they founded the Berlin based video art association VisualBerlin, aiming at collaborative projects and mutual exchange within the local scene and to cooperate with other international VJ associations in the tradition of the globalized AVIT network. VisualBerlin.org

fRED | Digital ist besser! is a member of the Gemeinschaftspraxis in Berlin, working there as a grafic designer and typographer. The VJ thing started with the contact to the Unkool Projet, a group of musicians and other artists. With the support of fAlk and together with Apparatschik he did the first couple of gigs at the Zapata, as the visual frame for the whole project. These experiences and the contact to other vjpeople led to other gigs in changing crews. His search for inspiration even led all the way to New Delhi, where he mesmerized the Indian high society. Seeking for a sharing (tech, hints and footage) community and a grafical language to communicate with the crowd is the main topic of his work at the moment. kaklotter.de

Kiritan Flux is a geek to the core, who likes to play and experiment with aestetics as well as cables and nerd-gadgets. Armed with a powerbook, midi controller, his node based Max/Jitter software arsenal, he celebrates visual frenzies of mixing lo-fi trash with elegant high gloss treasures. His content consists of self-filmed absurdities, abstract forms and patterns and b-movie galore. Kiritan Flux has been living in Berlin since 2000 and presents his art in various venues around the city and beyond. In his regular life, he twiddles on his university degree in digital media sciences and earns his living by doing freelance multimedia work. Before he joined forces with fRED, he worked together with VJ Berlingrad as ZikZak Corp. kiritanflux.de
